CULTURE

Traditions:

For a country of such small size, Kuwait boasts a very broad and rich culture, containing a particular heritage and encompassing certain trends whose roots are embedded in the cultural traditions of antiquity. Kuwait holds a strong tie to its past, and the government takes pride in its assistance in the retaining of historical artifacts and antiques, as well as in the preservation of the arts and modern cultural endeavors.

Today, Kuwaiti society bases much of its culture on the country's ancient folklore, which is a broad-ranging mosaic of emblematic land and sea tales, riddles, and proverbs. In 1956, the Folklore Preservation Center was established in an attempt to collect, record, and classify Kuwaiti folklore, as a way of assuring that this piece of Kuwait's historical culture will forever be maintained and hold a prominent place in the traditions of today.

Food plays a large part in Kuwaiti culture. The national dish of Kuwait known as mach boos consists mainly of mutton, chicken, or fish placed over or mixed in a large mass of well-cooked and prepared rice. Food is almost always prepared and served in large amounts, and it is extremely common for households to invite guests over to share meals.

Celebrations:

Kuwait Festivals form an important part of the lifestyle and culture of the Kuwaitis.

Important Festivals of Kuwait

Eid al Fitr – This is one of the most important festivals of Kuwait, which hold immense religious significance for the Muslims. This festival is celebrated in order to mark the end of the fasting month Ramadan. This Kuwait Festival is celebrated with great enjoyment.

Eid al Adha – This is yet another important religious Kuwait Festival that is celebrated either on the tenth or the twelfth day of Dhu al Hijjah or on the sacred month of pilgrimage.

National Day – This is one of the most important national festivals of Kuwait, which reflects the true patriotic feeling of the Kuwaitis. National Day is celebrated on the 25th of February, which signifies the inception of Kuwait as a nation in 1961. The Kuwaitis wear national dresses on this day and also meet with their dear ones.

Liberation Day – This is celebrated on the 26th of February. This festival marks the liberation of Kuwait from Iraq, which was gained on the 26th of February, 1991. This day also rekindles the patriotic sentiments within the Kuwaitis and also enables them to remember the great sacrifices that were made in gaining liberation from Iraq.

Alcohol:

Alcohol is strictly illegal in Kuwait: it may not be imported, manufactured or served. However, some expat-geared restaurants have been known to offer "special" tea, and newspapers regularly report busts of illegal distilleries. Unlike neighbouring states; Bahrain, Qatar and UAE Alcohol cannot be even served at hotels or permit holders.

Sports and Hobbies:

Sport has taken its rightful place in Kuwait society and there is a wide range of sporting activities and facilities available throughout the country. Sporting activities include:
  • Indoor Sports: Ice skating, Bowling, Darts, Table Tennis, and Martial Arts.

  • Outdoor Sports: Water Sports, Diving, Athletics, Team Sports, Golf, Tennis, Motor Racing and Horse Racing.
Football is the most popular sport in Kuwait. The unlimited official and popular support has led to outstanding success internationally. The National Soccer Team has achieved remarkable success at both international and Arab levels.

Equestrian sport also achieved impressive overseas success where Kuwait's show-jumpers captured gold, silver and bronze medals in Asian Games held in India, and won the fifth Arab Equestrian Championship which Kuwait hosted in 1985.
